151. Don’t Be Deceived by the New Age
Spiritual deception often comes wrapped in the most appealing packages. Today we pull back the curtain on one of the most pervasive spiritual counterfeits infiltrating our culture and even Christian spaces: the New Age movement.
This spiritual smokescreen markets itself as light, love, and healing but actually leads people into darkness and occult practices. From yoga studios to children's cartoons, from wellness influencers to bestselling books, the New Age isn't always labeled, but it's always lurking. What makes it particularly dangerous is how it borrows Christian terminology while promoting fundamentally unbiblical beliefs.
The New Age isn't one religion but a spiritual buffet mixing elements of Hinduism, Buddhism, paganism, and witchcraft. Popular concepts like manifestation, energy healing, crystal work, and communicating with spirit guides might seem harmless or even beneficial, but they're rooted in divination and idolatry – practices explicitly forbidden in Scripture. Perhaps most concerning is "Christ consciousness," which sounds spiritual but teaches that Jesus wasn't the Son of God or our Savior, just an enlightened man who discovered divine truth. This flips the gospel on its head, promoting self-deification instead of salvation through Christ alone.
We're witnessing the normalization of mediums on reality shows, witchcraft in entertainment, and occult tools marketed as self-care essentials. The spiritual consequences are real, opening doors to demonic influence and bondage. Yet there's hope – many former New Age practitioners have found freedom in Christ and now warn others about these dangers. As believers, we must prioritize spiritual discernment, recognizing that no crystal, psychic, or spiritual download can ever replace Jesus Christ – the way, the truth, and the life. Join me as we learn to distinguish genuine spiritual light from its counterfeit versions.

The Hello and welcome back to the Radiant Mission Podcast. My name is Rebecca Toomey, and so far in this series we have talked about demons. We have talked about spiritual warfare, the Nephilim, astrology and a lot more, but there is another deception that we need to address today, one that is becoming so common that even Christians are getting swept up into it. We are talking about the New Age movement. It's a spiritual smokescreen of sorts that markets itself as light, love and healing, but it is actually leading people into darkness, idolatry and into the occult, unfortunately, and the hardest part is that it's everywhere, literally everywhere, from yoga studios to children's cartoons, from wellness influencers to best-selling books, angel card readings to Christian energy healers. The new age isn't always labeled, but it is always lurking. You could walk into any big box store today and you're going to find new age products marketed to children specifically, which is crazy. So today we are going to define what the new age really is. We're going to explore how it borrows Christian language but promotes unbiblical beliefs. We're going to look at why things like manifestation, energy healing and spirit guides are actually spiritually dangerous, and I'd like to equip you to recognize these deceptions when they show up in your life. So let's dive in y'all.
Rebecca Twomey:First, we're going to start off with the definition here. What is the new age? It is not one religion. It's more like a spiritual buffet of sorts, if you want to think about it that way. It mixes bits of Hinduism, buddhism, paganism, witchcraft and mystical philosophies. They all have this goal of achieving a higher consciousness or enlightenment. And popular concepts in the new age are things like the law of attraction or manifesting your reality, chakra, energy or crystal healing, spirit guides and angel communication, reincarnation and karma, astrology and birth charts and mediumship and psychic abilities. And while these may seem harmless or trendy, they are rooted in divination, which we talked about last episode with astrology and we've discussed before on this podcast as well in previous episodes. It's really rooted in this idolatry and the spiritism which are all forbidden by God.
Rebecca Twomey:In scripture. We are told in Deuteronomy 18, verses 10 through 12, there shall not be found among you anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens or a sorcerer, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And the problem is that the new age it's often rebranding in this way of using soft, appealing language like tapping into the universe or listening to your higher self, or connecting with divine feminine energy, or healing your trauma through sound baths. These ideas sound peaceful and even empowering, or even positive, but they don't lead to the Holy Spirit. They lead to spiritual deception. Why are Christians falling for it? Because this is one of the biggest tactics that the enemy is using to disguise himself as light. In 2 Corinthians 11 14, we are told even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light, and that's why the new age beliefs are so seductive. They're claiming to promote peace and personal power, empowerment, healing. These are all things that we want, right, these are all things that we long for. But what's even worse is that many people are wrapping the new age beliefs and these new age ideas into Christian language. So God wants you to manifest the life of your dream, or Jesus was the original energy healer, or your angels are waiting to speak with you Just ask. But the source of these messages is not the God of the Bible. They are spiritual counterfeits and they invite people to pursue spiritual experiences apart from Christ. And, just like the forbidden knowledge given by the Nephilim in the book of Enoch, new age practices claim to give you hidden wisdom as well, but they ultimately are drawing you away from the truth, and one of those truths that I really want to mention here is Christ consciousness. It is a deceptive twist on Jesus, you guys. It is one of the more subtle and dangerous new age beliefs, because it's making its way into Christian spaces, and I have been seeing it pop up a lot on social media lately, and it even sounds spiritual right, because it's using the word Christian. But don't be fooled by the name.
Rebecca Twomey:Christ consciousness teaches that Jesus wasn't the son of God or our savior, but rather an enlightened man who reached a higher spiritual state, one that we can all reach to. And, according to this belief, jesus didn't die for our sins. He simply discovered divine truth, and now we're all supposed to follow his example by awakening our own inner divinity. Yeah, I'm gonna let that sink in for a minute. And this really is flipping the gospel on its head, because, instead of repentance and faith in Jesus, it's promoting self-discovery and self-defecation. And instead of Jesus being the only way, you are told that you already have the power within you. And instead of surrendering to God, you are encouraged to become your own God. It's the original lie from the garden In Genesis 3, 5, you will be like God and now people are being told you are God.
Rebecca Twomey:The thing that's crazy to me about Christ consciousness is that they're stealing Jesus' name but denying his identity. They're denying his mission and but denying his identity, they're denying his mission and the truth of the gospel and that, honestly, is not harmless. It is a counterfeit spirit and it's designed to pull people away from salvation. So if you hear phrases like Jesus was just a great spiritual leader, or just a great spiritual teacher, or the Christ is a state of being, not a person, or we all have divine potential if we just awaken to it, that is not true faith in Jesus Christ, that is not Christianity, that is not being a believer, that is not following the way. That is new age in disguise.
Rebecca Twomey:Let's talk a little bit more about some modern deceptions mediums, witches and all that. You might be surprised or you might not, because I am not at this point at just how much the new age has influenced today's culture. Mediums are now celebrated on reality shows I see it constantly all the time Shows like 90 Day Fiance, long Island Medium, all these shows that are coming up on any platform. Really, I was going to mention Discovery Plus or TLC, but it's been going on there for a while and others. Witchcraft is mainstream. I mean, look at any Disney show or movie. It has magic in it and witchcraft and there are trending TikToks spell kits that are sold on Etsy and Walmart. Pop stars are openly identifying as witches. Tarot cards, crystals, astrology apps they're all marketed as tools for self-care and it's not just acceptable, now it is trendy. People are literally putting that they are witchy or a witch as their Instagram bio.
Rebecca Twomey:But the spiritual consequences here are real and people who open themselves up to these practices are opening doors to demonic influence and bondage. Some may not realize it until it is too late, but god can set you and any of us free, so praise god. There have been many who have been rescued from this. Last week, I mentioned folks like Jen Niza and Doreen Virtue, who were former psychics and New Age teachers, and they gave their life to Christ and they're now warning the church not to fall into these same traps. There are many, many more like this. If you are looking to be inspired from others who have broken free, please reach out to me.
Rebecca Twomey:Another new age deception that we actually did discuss on this podcast previously is with yoga and Mama Madeline. On Instagram she shared her testimony. So go back into the archives for that one, or simply shoot me a message, I'll send you that episode. But yeah, as we wrap up today, a couple of final thoughts. Archives for that one. Or simply shoot me a message I'll send you that episode. But yeah, as we wrap up today, a couple of final thoughts.
Rebecca Twomey:I just want to encourage you not to be deceived, because the new age is going to encourage or promote light, but it is counterfeit light, and it says that you can find the truth within yourself and that you are divine, that the universe will respond to your intentions. But here's what Jesus says in John 14, 6, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. There is one God, there is one Holy Spirit and there is one way to eternal life, and that is through Jesus Christ alone. Himself. No crystal, no psychic, no spiritual download will ever replace the son of God, jesus Christ.
Rebecca Twomey:So, as we wrap up today, I have a few reflection questions. Have I unknowingly embraced new age ideas in the name of peace or self-growth? Where do I seek guidance? From God's word or from spiritual experiences? Where do I seek guidance from god's word or from spiritual experiences, am I willing to let go of anything that doesn't align with scripture, even if it's popular? Let's be the people who love spiritual truth more than trends, and let's follow jesus the real jesus, not energy, not stars, not our higher selves and let's walk in his spirit, not counterfeit spirits, and let's pray for discernment in the age of deception.
Rebecca Twomey:If you found this episode helpful or interesting, please be sure to share it with a friend. Thank you so much for tuning in. And today I'm going to close with a verse that leaves a little bit of a final warning from scripture and a call to stay alert, and that is 1 Timothy 4, verse 1. Now the spirit expressly says that in later times, some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons. On that note, I am wishing you a radiant week and I'll see you next time. Bye.
