158. The Broken Healthcare System: Why True Healing Starts with God

The headlines say we’ve never had more “health care,” yet our families feel more exhausted, inflamed, and overwhelmed than ever. We open a new series that re-examines wellness through God’s design—moving beyond symptom management to honest, practical steps that restore energy, clarity, and resilience. Rebecca shares a personal postpartum wake-up: an active Epstein-Barr diagnosis that forced a reckoning with survival-mode habits. By shifting to simple whole foods, removing sugar and processed ingredients, and supporting sleep and the immune system, she experienced less inflammation, steadier energy, and real momentum—without chasing fads or quick fixes.

Together we explore why the modern system often keeps us dependent, how ultra-processed foods are engineered to hook our brains, and why many common drugs manage symptoms rather than address root causes. From Psalm 139 to 1 Corinthians 6, we ground the conversation in biblical stewardship: the body as a temple, fearfully and wonderfully made, designed with detox pathways and immune intelligence. That lens reframes health as obedience and freedom, not fear—an invitation to align inputs with design and to choose habits that honor the One who made us.

We also preview what’s ahead in the series: a critical look at “safe” over-the-counter staples like Tylenol, what’s actually in our food and how it shapes children’s health, a frank revisit to vaccine ingredients and ethics, plus stress, sleep, and spiritual warfare. Walk away with reflection questions to guide your week and a simple challenge: ask whether your next bite or pill nourishes or just numbs. If this resonates, share the episode with a friend, subscribe for the series, and leave a review so more people can find these conversations. Your body was built for resilience—let’s align with its design.

Speaker 00:

Hello and welcome back to the Radiant Mission Podcast. My name is Rebecca Twomey, and today we are diving into something that has been heavy on my heart for a long time. If you have been paying attention, you know that things are getting wild in the world when it comes to our health. Americans are sicker than ever, even though we have more so-called health care than ever before. It is clear that we are living in a pretty horrific time for the human body. The food that we eat isn't even real food. The medications we are prescribed don't fix anything at the root. They just mask symptoms. And perhaps the most alarming of all, our babies and our young children are being injected with chemicals, viruses, aborted fetal cell lines from the very beginning of their lives. So today we are starting a brand new series all about health through the lens of God's design for our bodies. And if you have been following along with the podcast for a while, you might remember that we did a mini-series on God's design for health and God's design for birth. Well, this is circling back to those conversations, but with a deeper dive. Let's start with the big picture and discuss the state of health here in America, which is where I am. Chronic illness is skyrocketing. Autoimmune disease is exploding. Cancer is touching almost every single family. And children are struggling with ADHD allergies, asthma, autism, obesity, and the list just goes on and on. Yet, with all of our modern medicine and technology, all the interventions, people are not getting healthier. They are actually getting sicker. So here's the thing the system that we call health care is not actually about health. It is about sickness and it is about managing disease and prolonging dependency. You may remember we did an episode on the Rockefeller family way back when. Please refer back to that episode. It is not about prevention, it is certainly not about healing at the root cause. Because why would we do that when you are a customer? So we're going to talk about that in this series. This is just an intro episode, a little taste of things to come. And with that said, I want to share a little bit about my own personal journey. Recently, I've been having these awakenings from the Lord about my health over the last five years or more, really. I guess it's been over the last probably seven to eight years. And this year, I had another one. So I'm going to share something personal with you because I really believe that testimonies can bring truth to life. So not too long ago, I was not feeling good. I was not feeling myself. You may remember the episode about the Lord speaking to me in the McDonald's drive-thru. Well, right after recording that episode, I actually asked my functional medicine doctor's office to test me for Epstein Barr. And guess what, you guys? It came back positive, came back active. So I discovered that however many months postpartum, I guess that began around three months postpartum for me, and I'm now seven months postpartum. I have active Epstein Bar. And that fatigue that I carried and the inflammation, the extra weight, of course, I just had a baby, but it all was starting to finally make sense for me. For years, I have been living in survival mode. I am a working, full-time working mom of four young children. My oldest is only five and a half. And I'm home work from home by the grace of God. And I'm not even talking about this podcast. This podcast is a passion project that I do on the side. This is strictly for the Lord and to share all the good things that He's done for me and all of the things that I am learning because of him and his goodness. So anyway, living in survival mode, following what I thought was a pretty normal diet and even airing to the side of trying to be healthy, taking advice from my naturally minded doctors as well, you know, just doing my best to keep up. But when I started looking at what was actually happening inside my body, I realized that God designed it to heal and to be in alignment with him. If I gave it what it needed, truly from the Lord. So as soon as I found out that that's what was going on, I made changes to my diet, immediately went on AIP, removed toxins, stopped consuming sugar, processed foods, and started to learn how to support my immune system. And I have begun to feel better. The inflammation has gone down. I have lost 30 pounds since this began, and it's been almost two months now. And this isn't about a fad diet. This was about healing my body, and this was literally just not eating processed foods, you guys. I went down to eating fruits, vegetables, and meats with some salt and herbs and limitations to some of those fruits and vegetables as well. But I realized that my body wasn't broken. It was just crying out for me to listen to it. Stop eating this trash. You are poisoning yourself, literally. And so this journey has really opened up my eyes. It's taught me that really it's reminded me that the system isn't built to help us heal, but to keep us dependent. The only way to heal is for us to get into alignment. The only way for me to heal was for me to get into alignment with the Lord and how he created my body and what he intended for me to eat. In Psalm 139, it says that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Think about that. God knit you together in your mother's womb with precision and purpose. He gave you an immune system that was designed to fight off invaders. He gave you detox pathways in your liver, in your kidneys, your skin, and your lungs. And our bodies were built for and designed for resilience. But here's the problem: when we bombard them with toxins, processed foods, synthetic chemicals, food coloring, constant stress, we are overriding the design. And it's no wonder why we are sick. It's like pouring sugar into the gas tank of a car. The car was designed to run beautifully until we put in the wrong fuel. And scripture doesn't just affirm that we're beautifully made, it also commands us to steward these bodies that we are in. In 1 Corinthians 6, 19 through 20, it says, Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own. You are bought out of price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies. This means that health isn't just about feeling good, it's also about obedience. Now, let's be real about what we are up against here. It is a broken system. The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most profitable industries in the world. Their business model depends on sick people, not healthy ones. So that is why when you go to Google, when you go to search engines, you go to social media, you are not going to find these pharmaceutical companies ratting on themselves. You're not going to find them saying that what they are doing is wrong. Quite the opposite. And that is why most medications are designed to manage the symptoms, not cure. Blood pressure medications don't cure high blood pressure. They keep it in check. And antidepressants don't heal the root cause of depression, they numb the depression. Painkillers don't fix the cause of pain, they mask the pain. And what about our food system? Companies make billions selling cheap, addictive, processed foods filled with sugar, chemicals, and artificial ingredients. These foods are engineered to hook you, hook you, get you addicted, not to heal you. That is why MSG, which is a lavenoid enhancer of sorts, it is designed to get you to keep coming back to that food more and more. It's why when you sit down with a bag of cool ranch Doritos, you can't stop. Food scientists designed them that way. They want you to eat that chip and your brain to fire off and to continue eating until you have finished that bag. So you'll go buy more. They want us to stay dependent on the foods, the medications, and on the system. It is not an accident. But as Christians, we are called to live differently. In Romans 12, 2, it says, do not conform to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. We need to start looking at health through God's truth, not the world's lies and deception. Let's talk a little bit about where this series is going. Over the next several episodes, we're going to uncover the truth in some very specific areas. Of course, all of the rage right now is the Tylenol conversation, most common safe drugs, but let's we're going to talk about why it's not safe. And this is not new information. It just so happens that it's finally in the mainstream. We are also going to look at other medications. We're going to talk about what's really in our food and how it's affecting our children. We are going to dig back into vaccines, my favorite, and the chemicals that are being injected into tiny bodies. We are going to talk about stress, sleep, and even spiritual warfare when it comes to health. And most importantly, we are going to talk about how to realign with God's design so that we can walk in freedom, in healing, and in wholeness. In the coffee talk series that we have been going through, I had reflection questions. And I kind of liked that because it got and left something to think about. And since this is an intro episode, I'm going to keep that trend going a little bit. I do have some reflection questions that I want you to think about as you're going through your week until we get to our next episode. And let's start with the first one. Have you ever questioned whether what you're eating is actually nourishing your body or just filling your stomach? Have you ever taken a medication and wondered, is this healing me or just masking symptoms? And then lastly, what does it mean for you personally to honor God with your body as his temple? So, you know, just to be clear, this is not going to be about fear. This is the opposite. This is about freedom. Jesus said in John 8.32, you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. When we learn the truth about how our bodies were designed and how they were meant to function, and then we see that parallel next to the lies that we are fed about the system. From this system that we live in, we can begin to walk in freedom. So let's pray, Lord, open our eyes to the truth about our health and our bodies. Help us to see past the lies of the world and align ourselves with your design. Strengthen us to make wise choices and give us the courage to steward these temples of yours with faithfulness. Amen.
